SS-31, also known as elamipretide, is a mitochondria-targeting tetrapeptide supplied as a 50mg lyophilized research peptide. It binds cardiolipin in the inner mitochondrial membrane and is studied for its effects on mitochondrial energy production and oxidative stress.
SS-31 is one of the Szeto-Schiller (SS) peptides, a family of small aromatic-cationic peptides designed to reach the inner mitochondrial membrane. Its sequence is D-Arg-Dmt-Lys-Phe-NH2, where Dmt is 2′,6′-dimethyltyrosine. The alternating positive charges and aromatic residues let it pass through cell membranes and concentrate in mitochondria.
Under the drug name elamipretide, it received accelerated approval from the U.S. FDA in September 2025 for a rare mitochondrial disease. The product supplied here is a research-grade compound for laboratory use only.
Cardiolipin is a phospholipid found almost only in the inner mitochondrial membrane. It helps hold together the protein complexes of the electron transport chain and shapes the folded cristae where ATP is produced. When cardiolipin is oxidised or depleted, electron transport becomes less efficient and more reactive oxygen species are produced.
SS-31 binds cardiolipin selectively. Research suggests this interaction helps stabilise cristae structure, supports electron transport and ATP synthesis, and reduces mitochondrial production of reactive oxygen species.
A detailed review describes SS-31 as a first-in-class cardiolipin-protective compound and summarises preclinical studies in models of ischaemia-reperfusion injury, heart failure, kidney injury and age-related mitochondrial decline (Szeto, British Journal of Pharmacology, 2014).
Clinical development of elamipretide has focused on primary mitochondrial diseases. That literature is cited for scientific context only and makes no claim about this research product.
Yes. SS-31 is the research name for the tetrapeptide D-Arg-Dmt-Lys-Phe-NH2. Elamipretide is its international nonproprietary name, and it has also been known as MTP-131 and Bendavia.
SS-31 is available as a 50mg lyophilized powder vial, shipped from Canada.
