GHK-Cu is a naturally occurring copper-binding tripeptide (glycyl-L-histidyl-L-lysine), supplied as a 100mg lyophilized research compound. It is studied for its role in collagen production, extracellular matrix remodelling, wound repair and skin and hair-follicle biology.
GHK is a tripeptide made of glycine, histidine and lysine. It has a strong affinity for copper(II) ions, and the resulting complex is known as GHK-Cu or copper peptide. GHK was first isolated from human plasma by Loren Pickart in 1973, and it is also found in saliva and urine.
Plasma levels of GHK have been reported to fall with age, which has made it a long-standing subject of research into tissue repair and skin biology. It is also widely used in cosmetic formulations.
GHK-Cu is thought to act partly by delivering copper to cells, where copper is a cofactor for enzymes involved in collagen cross-linking and antioxidant defence. In research models it has been associated with increased synthesis of collagen, elastin and glycosaminoglycans, and with regulation of the enzymes that break down and rebuild the extracellular matrix.
Gene-expression studies suggest GHK can shift the activity of a large number of human genes toward patterns associated with tissue repair, which has broadened research interest beyond skin into other regenerative and protective pathways.
A review by Pickart and Margolina summarises research on GHK-Cu in wound healing, skin remodelling, hair growth and anti-inflammatory and antioxidant activity, and discusses data showing GHK affects the expression of many human genes (Pickart and Margolina, International Journal of Molecular Sciences, 2018).
An earlier review covers its role in tissue remodelling and extracellular matrix regulation (Pickart, Journal of Biomaterials Science, Polymer Edition, 2008). This literature is cited for scientific context only.
GHK is the tripeptide glycyl-L-histidyl-L-lysine on its own. GHK-Cu is the same peptide bound to a copper(II) ion, which is the form most studied for tissue remodelling.
GHK-Cu is available as a 100mg lyophilized powder vial, shipped from Canada.
