MOTS-C is a 16-amino-acid peptide encoded by mitochondrial DNA, supplied as a 40mg lyophilized research peptide. It is studied for its role in cellular energy metabolism, glucose utilisation, insulin sensitivity and the response of cells to metabolic stress.
MOTS-C (mitochondrial open reading frame of the 12S rRNA type-c) is a 16-amino-acid peptide with the sequence MRWQEMGYIFYPRKLR. It is encoded within the mitochondrial MT-RNR1 gene, which makes it one of a small group of mitochondrial-derived peptides that act as signalling molecules outside the mitochondria.
It was discovered in 2015 by researchers at the University of Southern California, and it has since become a widely studied peptide in research on metabolism, exercise physiology and ageing.
The discovery study linked MOTS-C to inhibition of the folate cycle and activation of AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK), a central regulator of cellular energy balance. A later study reported that under metabolic stress MOTS-C moves into the cell nucleus and helps regulate genes involved in the antioxidant response (Kim et al., Cell Metabolism, 2018).
These findings position MOTS-C as a messenger between mitochondria and the rest of the cell, which is why it is studied in models of insulin resistance, obesity and age-related decline in physical function.
The discovery paper reported that MOTS-C targets skeletal muscle and improved insulin sensitivity and prevented diet-induced obesity in mouse models (Lee et al., Cell Metabolism, 2015).
A later study described MOTS-C as an exercise-induced regulator, reporting that its levels rise with exercise and that it improved physical performance in young, middle-aged and older mice (Reynolds et al., Nature Communications, 2021). These are preclinical findings, cited for scientific context only.
Most peptides are encoded by nuclear DNA. MOTS-C is encoded by mitochondrial DNA, so it is studied as a signal through which mitochondria communicate with the rest of the cell and with other tissues.
MOTS-C is available as a 40mg lyophilized powder vial, shipped from Canada.
