Glutathione is a naturally occurring tripeptide antioxidant made of glutamate, cysteine and glycine, supplied as a 1500mg lyophilized research compound. It is studied for its central role in cellular redox balance, oxidative stress defence and detoxification pathways.
Glutathione (γ-L-glutamyl-L-cysteinyl-glycine, GSH) is a tripeptide found in almost every cell, often at millimolar concentrations, which makes it the most abundant non-protein thiol in the body. An unusual gamma peptide bond between glutamate and cysteine protects it from breakdown by most peptidases.
Cells make glutathione in two ATP-dependent steps, catalysed by glutamate-cysteine ligase and glutathione synthetase. The supply of cysteine is usually the limiting factor.
The thiol group of cysteine lets glutathione donate electrons to neutralise reactive oxygen species and to regenerate other antioxidants. In the process, reduced glutathione (GSH) is converted to its oxidised form (GSSG), and the GSH:GSSG ratio is widely used as a marker of cellular oxidative stress.
Glutathione is also a substrate for enzyme families such as glutathione peroxidases, which reduce peroxides, and glutathione S-transferases, which attach glutathione to reactive compounds so they can be removed from the cell. These roles connect it to redox signalling, detoxification and cell survival.
A widely cited review describes glutathione's protective roles, how it is measured and how it is synthesised (Forman, Zhang and Rinna, Molecular Aspects of Medicine, 2009).
The regulation of glutathione synthesis, and how it changes in disease models, is reviewed in Lu, Biochimica et Biophysica Acta, 2013. This literature is cited for scientific context only.
Yes. Glutathione is a tripeptide of glutamate, cysteine and glycine, although its gamma peptide bond is unusual and protects it from most peptidases.
Glutathione is available as a 1500mg lyophilized powder vial, shipped from Canada.
