About Bacteriostatic Water

Bacteriostatic water is sterile water containing 0.9% benzyl alcohol as a preservative, supplied in 3mL and 10mL vials. It is used in the laboratory to reconstitute lyophilized research peptides, and the preservative allows a vial to be accessed more than once.

What is bacteriostatic water?

Bacteriostatic water is sterile, non-pyrogenic water that contains 0.9% benzyl alcohol. Benzyl alcohol is bacteriostatic: it inhibits the growth of most bacteria that might be introduced when a needle passes through the vial stopper, rather than killing them outright.

Lyophilized (freeze-dried) peptides are shipped as a dry powder because they are much more stable that way. Before use in an experiment, the powder is reconstituted, or dissolved, in a suitable diluent. Bacteriostatic water is one of the most common choices for that step.

Bacteriostatic water vs sterile water

Sterile water contains no preservative, so a vial is generally intended for a single use and should be discarded once opened. Because bacteriostatic water contains benzyl alcohol, a vial can be accessed multiple times over a longer period, which suits peptides that are drawn from the same vial more than once.

Some compounds are incompatible with benzyl alcohol, so researchers should confirm the right diluent for each compound and protocol.

Bacteriostatic Water FAQ

What sizes does BioAscend carry?

Bacteriostatic water is available in 3mL and 10mL vials, shipped from Canada.

How should bacteriostatic water be stored?

Store at controlled room temperature, 20–25°C, away from direct light.

Can bacteriostatic water be used with every peptide?

Not always. Some compounds are incompatible with benzyl alcohol, so check the recommended diluent for each compound and protocol.
